The Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset

The Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset has welcomed Kyoko Wills as its newest member.

Wills has been on Maui since April 2017 and works as a Vice President of Old Republic Title Company in Lahaina.  Before moving to Maui, she lived in California.

Wills was joined at the ceremony by her partner Mitch and inducted by Rotary District 5000 Assistant District Governor Wendy Hornack, Nancy Montoya served as Will’s membership sponsor.

Please join us for a Friend-Raiser on Tuesday, July 18, 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Royal Lahaina Resort, 2780 Kekaa Drive, Kaanapali.

Club members will discuss our community service projects, including the monthly Third Saturday Recycling program at Lahaina Cannery Mall now entering its third year. We will provide complimentary pupus and there will be a no-host bar with happy hour drink prices until 6:00 p.m. The meeting will be held in the Royal Ocean Terrace. Parking is free for attendees.

“We’re proud of our service to this community,” said Mariko Higashi, Co-President-Elect. “Our goal with this Friend-Raiser is to meet some new friends, folks who may be willing to join us in tackling big things here in West Maui.”

If you're looking for a way to give back to the community, Rotary provides the perfect avenue to do this.

"In Rotary, we believe many hands make light work. As Rotarians, we gladly volunteer our time, and we always get back more than we give,” said Interim President Joanne Laird.

No obligation. Come talk story!

To attend the Friend-Raiser, RSVP to Mariko Higashi at marikoinmaui@gmail.com or 866-8116.

The Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset awarded its second annual Go Green academic scholarship to Lily Jenkins on May 30 during its weekly club meeting. Lily received $2500 toward earning a five year dual degree in Environmental Science and Information Systems with a minor in Business. She will be attending the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in the fall.

Selected from a competitive field of applicants, Lily’s academic achievements at Molokai High School as well as her extensive volunteer work and exceptional leadership skills earned her the award. Among her many volunteer activities, Lily has assisted with wetland restoration for Nene O Molokai since 2006.

“From an early age, Lily recognized an environmental need in her community and decided to do something about it,” said Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset interim president, Joanne Laird. “She is a positive role model for all of us,” she said.

The scholarship is funded through the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset’s annual “Go for the Green” St. Patrick’s Day event. It demonstrates the club’s commitment to environmental initiatives and to the long-term educational goals of local students.

“Thanks to the community’s generous support of our St. Patrick’s Day fundraiser, we are able to assist Lily with her environmental studies,” said Laird. “We are excited to follow her future academic achievements and look forward to another successful fundraiser in March 2018 that will enable us to help more local students and the environment,” she said.

To qualify for the $2500 scholarship, the student had to be a graduating senior who lives in West Maui, Lanai or Molokai and attends a Maui, Lanai or Molokai high school. The student had to demonstrate superior academic abilities, involvement in school activities and a winning character profile and must be pursuing a field of study that will benefit the environment.
