The Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset is awarding one $2,500 academic scholarship to a graduating senior who lives in West Maui or Molokai and attends a Maui or Molokai high school. The student should demonstrate superior academic abilities, involvement in school activities and a winning character profile and must be pursuing a field of study that will benefit the environment.

The scholarship highlights the club’s commitment to support the educational goals of local youth. “We're pleased to support the educational goals of a local student who will have the opportunity to continue sustainability efforts on Maui well into the future,” said Joanne Laird, Youth Service Chair.

The academic award also reflects the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset’s focus on environmental initiatives, a core mission that is realized through sustainability projects and its “Go Green” Third Saturday Recycling event held monthly at the Lahaina Cannery Mall.

The scholarship will be provided in two installments. The first, for one half of the scholarship amount, will be dispersed to the college when evidence of enrollment is presented to the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset.  The remaining half of the scholarship will be paid to the recipient’s college when evidence of successful completion of twelve semester hours is presented to the club.

The application deadline is March 31, 2017.  To receive a scholarship application or to learn more about the award, email Youth Service Chair Joanne Laird at mamalrd01@gmail.com  or call (808)757-0981.
