5th Annual Vocational Service Awards Presented

At a recent “Celebrations Meeting” the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset presented the fifth annual Vocational Service Awards to an individual and a local non-profit organization.  These Vocational Service award recipients were selected for demonstrating integrity through high ethical behavior that is the foundation of Rotary.  The recipients provide a road map for ethical behavior in the workplace and other areas of life.  This award is presented annually to individuals and a business or non-profit that provides outstanding service to our community and/or our club.  The recipients truly demonstrate the Rotary philosophy of “Service Above Self”.

George Gordon was the recipient of the 2021 Individual Vocational Service Award.  He is  the owner of Mauisoft Computer Repair and has lived on the islands for 50 years.  George was the club’s first speaker when it pivoted to Zoom meetings last spring.  When club members discovered that families at Princess Nahienaena School did not have computers at home for distance learning, George offered his services to refurbish donated computers at little cost.  He spent countless hours working on over 70 donated computers which were then given to the families to keep.

Jenny Pell represented Ohana Gardens, the recipient of the non-profit Vocational Service Award. Pell has been managing the roll-out of `Ohana Gardens initiative alongside the board of directors of Food Security Hawaii since February 2020.  As ambitious as it sounds, food security for everyone on Maui is not at all unattainable!  Jenny believes it starts right in our backyards and lanai, and every morsel "grown here not flown here" counts.  `Ohana Gardens exceeded the Rotary clubs inspirational/aspirational goal of getting over 1,000 food-bearing trees planted in a year across the County with the dedication and help of many volunteers, but especially from Rotary Clubs of Maui.
