Mission Statement

The mission of the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset is to enhance the quality of life in West Maui and beyond by engaging in meaningful, achievable projects in Rotary International’s five avenues of service, including:

  • Club Service
  • Community Service
  • International Service
  • Vocational Service
  • Youth Service

“Go Green” Focus

Within the second avenue of service, Community Service, the club has chosen to focus special attention on environment-related projects including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Solid waste management including reduction, reuse and recycling
  • Traditional Hawaiian practices
  • Watershed conservation
  • Reef and ocean preservation
  • Alternative transportation, including bicycling
  • Reduced fossil fuel dependence • Beach cleanup
  • Community cleanup
  • Public education
  • Environmental advocacy

The “Go Green” focus has been chosen because of its importance to this island community, and because it reflects the traditions and values of this community’s native Hawaiian heritage. The land (‘aina) is sacred and must be respected. Our club seeks to uphold this Hawaiian tradition in our actions and our advocacy. All activities developed with an environmental focus will be positioned under the “Go Green” theme. This theme will allow us to connect various projects in the public mind, and to allow each to be perceived as part of a coordinated program, rather than a “one-time” effort.

It must be noted that the Rotary Club of Lahaina Sunset is not an environmental organization. This recognition, coupled with the recognition of our membership size and resources, properly limits the focus of our environmental activity. We seek to undertake initiatives, and engage in projects, that are meaningful and achievable. By subjecting proposed programs to these twin tests we seek to avoid over-reaching and taking on projects we cannot complete successfully.

To enhance our opportunities for success in environmental initiatives, we will partner with local community groups and governmental agencies when appropriate to leverage resources and achieve results.

Key elements of our “Go Green” focus involve community education and advocacy. To achieve these goals we will utilize local media and social media to invite community participation and support. Use of these media to communicate our “Go Green” programs will also help to support the club’s objectives in image development, membership development, fundraising, and more.

The club will seek opportunities to extend the “Go Green” focus into the other four avenues of service as appropriate. For example, the club may seek to focus some efforts in Youth Service on scholarships for high school students who intend to pursue higher education in environmental fields such as sustainable development.
